Pinch user manual

Pinch is a shopping list shared with your group — family, flatmates, whoever shops with you. As you use it, it learns how often you rebuy each item and suggests it when you are about to need it again.

The in-app tutorial shows the main gestures. Everything else is here, feature by feature.

1. Getting started

You sign in with your Google account. On first launch you choose the language and then one of two paths:

Everything you do on the list is shared in real time with the other members of the group. The app also works offline: changes sync as soon as the connection is back.

From the top, the home screen shows the suggestions, the shopping list, the + button to add items and, bottom left, the cart with recent purchases. Top right you find Statistics, Group and Settings.

2. The list

Adding an item

Tap + and type in the Search or create an item field.

Quantity

Use − and + on the row. For a large number, tap the number and type it.

Marking a purchase

Tap the checkbox to the left of the item: the row flies into the cart and the purchase is recorded with date, time and who made it. Only the checkbox marks a purchase, so it does not happen by accident when you touch the row.

Removing an item from the list

Swipe the row to the left. For a few seconds a message appears at the bottom, «name» removed from the list, with an Undo button: tap it to put the item back exactly where it was.

Removing is not buying: the item stays in the catalog and no purchase is recorded. If you remove an item that had been on the list for more than ten minutes, Pinch reads it as “I don't need it for now” and postpones its suggestion too.

Reordering

Drag the handle on the right of a row to change the order. With categories on you can reorder the items inside each category and the categories themselves, for example to follow your route through the shop. The order is personal: each member has their own.

Opening the details

Press and hold a row to open the item details.

3. Catalog and archive

The catalog is every item the group has created, on the list or not. You see it when you tap +. Each item keeps its own purchase history, and that is where suggestions come from: so it pays to reuse the existing item rather than create a new one with a similar name.

Archiving an item

If you no longer need an item, you can archive it: it leaves the catalog and is no longer suggested, but its history is kept.

An item that is on the list cannot be archived: buy it or remove it from the list first.

Restoring or deleting

Settings → Catalog → Archived items lists the archived items. From there you can restore them to the catalog or delete them permanently. Permanent deletion also erases the item's whole purchase history and cannot be undone.

Archived items also appear under Archived when you search from the + button: tapping one restores it and puts it back on the list.

4. Item details

Opened by pressing and holding an item on the list, in the catalog or among the suggestions. This is where everything about a single item is adjusted.

5. Categories

When you create an item, Pinch tries to give it a category from its name: fruit & vegetables, dairy & eggs, pantry, beverages, cleaning and so on. The list is then shown split into sections, one per category.

Changing an item's category

  1. Press and hold the item to open its details.
  2. Tap the Category row, which shows the current one.
  3. Pick the right category from the list.

The choice applies to the whole group and is no longer changed automatically. Items Pinch does not recognise end up under Other: that is the best place to start tidying up.

A list without categories

If you prefer a single list, turn off Settings → Categories. It is a personal preference: the other members keep seeing the list their way. With categories off, the Category row does not appear in the item details.

6. Suggestions

Each time you mark a purchase, Pinch measures how long it has been since the previous one. After two purchases of the same item it has a first estimate of the interval; later purchases refine it, based on the most recent ones. When the expected date gets close, the item appears in the Suggested section at the top of the home screen.

Suggestions are recalculated every few hours, so a change may not show up instantly.

What you can do with a suggestion

The ⋮ menu

Each suggestion has a menu with three entries, for when the prediction does not match reality:

After each of them Undo appears for a few seconds. You can open the menu with a tap, or press, slide to the entry and release.

When a suggestion comes too early

If you postpone the same item several times, Pinch points it out with a notice and shows the current interval. Open detail lets you correct the repurchase interval; with Ignore the notice does not come back for that cycle.

Tuning suggestions

7. Purchases and history

The cart at the bottom left opens Recent purchases: the group's latest purchases, with who made them and when.

The same actions are available in the History of the item details, which shows every purchase of that item.

Out-of-the-ordinary purchases

Stocked up for a party, or bought batteries twice in a week? In Edit purchase turn on Don't use for the interval calculation. The purchase stays in the log and in the statistics, marked Outside the interval, but does not distort the prediction.

8. Notifications

In Settings → Notifications you choose how often to be told about suggestions:

Summaries are only sent when there are suggestions. The choice is personal and, if you belong to several groups, separate for each group.

9. Vacations and absences

Vacation mode

When you are away, turn on Settings → Vacation mode. It applies to the whole group:

When you return, turn it off with the same switch. Suggestions resume within a few hours.

If you forgot to turn it on

After fourteen days with no activity in the group, Pinch asks on reopening how to treat that period: Ignore this period treats it like a vacation, Leave everything as is changes nothing.

10. Your group

The Group screen shows the group's name, the invite code and the members.

Inviting someone

If the code has ended up in the wrong hands, Regenerate code replaces it: the old one stops working.

Name, members, nickname

“From your group”

When another member accepts or postpones suggestions, or declares stock, a From your group card on the home screen tells you. Close it once you have read it; it goes away by itself after a day anyway.

Leaving the group

Leave group, at the bottom of the screen. You will no longer see that group's list, statistics and data; you can then create a new group or join another.

11. Multiple groups PRO

With Pinch Pro you can belong to several groups, up to three: home, second home, flatmates. Each group has its own list, catalog and settings.

Settings → Help has the Tutorial: multiple groups.

12. Statistics

The chart icon at the top opens the group's statistics:

You can choose the period among Month, Year and All time. Statistics count every purchase, including those made on vacation or left out of the interval calculation.

13. Appearance and language

Appearance and language are tied to your account: you find them on every device you sign in on.

14. Pinch Pro

Pinch is free and shows an ad on opening every now and then. Pinch Pro is a one-time purchase, with no subscription, and includes:

You unlock it from Settings → Unlock Pinch Pro, where you also find the price. The purchase is tied to your account: if you change phone or reinstall the app, use Restore purchases on the same screen.

16. Frequently asked questions

I removed an item from the list by mistake

Tap Undo on the message at the bottom right away. If it has already gone, tap + and look the item up in the catalog: the message showed you its name.

I ticked an item I did not buy

Open the cart at the bottom left, tap the arrow next to the purchase and confirm Move to list.

An item is in the wrong category

Press and hold it, tap Category and pick the right one. If the row is not there, turn on Settings → Categories.

I see no suggestions

Pinch needs at least two purchases of the same item to estimate its cadence. Also check that Suggestions is on in the settings and that the group is not in vacation mode.

An item is suggested too often, or too rarely

Open its details and set the Repurchase interval to Manual with the right number of days. If instead a single unusual purchase threw the prediction off, leave it out of the calculation from the history.

I do not want suggestions for a certain item

From the suggestion's ⋮ menu choose Stop suggesting, or turn on Disable prediction in its details.

I want to see the tutorial again

Settings → Help → Tutorial.
